ORIENTATE is a one-day symposium that is part of a series of events organized by the Glass Society of Ireland. Glass is a material, but for a number of people it forms their professional practice. Invited speakers will describe how their research paradigms contextualize their position and professional practice relative to glass media.

Emer Lynch is an Irish curator with a background in glass. She is interested in producing systems of conversation within exhibition spaces, and at TACTIC@Sample-Studios will curate a show that uses the site as a tool to make the work. The exhibition will feature work by Sofie Loscher, a visual artist whose practice focuses on installation with a scientific underpinning. Sofie has exhibited widely throughout Ireland, Europe and the United States. She holds an MA in Sculpture from NCAD and a BA in Visual Arts Practice from IADT, Dun Laoghaire.




              GLASS PAINTING with Cappy Thompson

Cappy Thompson, an American glass artist, will be leading a glass painting workshop at the National Sculpture Factory in Cork; and Angela Thwaites, a UK based glass artist; will be teaching a casting workshop at the National College of Art and Design in Dublin. Both workshops will take place on the 30, 31 Oct & 1 Nov.

- CAPPY THOMPSON will teach the technique of grisaille or grey-tonal painting, which involves several applications and firings of vitreous enamels. Students will focus on reverse painting a vessel form.  Included in the workshop will be slide lectures featuring contemporary glass painting from the Studio Glass Movement and an in-depth look at Thompson’s painted glass.  Students will receive handouts on the tools and materials of glass painting and firing schedules for both flat glass and vessel forms.                  MOULD-MAKING FOR GLASS  with Angela Thwaites

 - ANGELA THWAITES is  a UK based artist and researcher and the author of Mould Making for Glass and Mixing with the Best: Investigation and Comparison of Contemporary Working Methods and Mould Making Materials for Use in the Kiln Forming of Glass. She has taught internationally and has a vast knowledge of mould making techniques for glass. In her practice she uses lost wax to accomplish complex forms. In this workshop she will share her skills with the participants as they create their own cast glass works. All materials are included in the price of the workshop.
