About the BA in Musical Theatre
The BA in Musical Theatre is a specialist degree course aimed at 'triple-threat' performers - in other words centered on the three disciplines: Singing, Dancing, Acting
Students receive an intensive training in all three disciplines throughout their studies. Individual singing training, in both legitimate and contemporary styles, is supplemented by vocal ensemble (chorus) and musical theatre ensemble (staged scenes). Students attend music theory classes and musical theatre history and context lectures. Dance is a vital component and core studies in tap, ballet and jazz are supplemented with workshops by superb visiting professionals and fitness training. Acting, drama and spoken voice is the third core skill. Students take elective modules in theatre technology, design, directing etc to add to their general theatrical skillset. This full-time and demanding schedule of study and practice comes to a focus in a public production in each year.
Our superb full-time course team are highly qualified academics and professional performers with international careers. The team includes: Deirdre Collins – Acting Head of Department; David Hayes - Course Coordinator and Ensemble Lecturer; Irene O'Mara - Course Coordinator and Acting Lecturer; Mary Hegarty, Cathal Synnott, Majella Cullagh, Ryan Morgan, Dearbhaile McLean, and Kelley Petcu - Singing Lecturers; Aisling Byrne-Gaughan & Alex Glennon - Dance Lecturers; Ciaran Bermingham - Acting Lecturer; Maria Mulcahy, Tom Doyle, and John O'Brien - Theatre History and Musicianship Lecturers.
