Masterclass with - David Leisiner / Manahattan School of Music New York

Date: 11th November 2019
Time: 10-3pm
Venue: Doolan Room & Room 315, CIT Cork School of Music

David Leisner, Chair of the guitar department at the Manhattan School of Music, New York visits the CIT Cork School of Music on Monday week, November the 11th to give a lecture on his new book, Playing with Ease, published by Oxford University Press.

It is a book about ergonomic technique for the guitar, and is easily applicable to other instruments as well.  In this ground-breaking book, Leisner offers an introduction to the basic anatomy of movement, advice on relieving unnecessary tension, pioneering ideas about engaging large muscles, and tips for practicing and concert preparation.

The Lecture will take place in the Doolan Room: 10.00am – 12.00pm.

David Leisner suffered from a debilitating hand condition called focal dystonia from 1984 to 1996.  Focal dystonia is a painless hand condition in which the fingers either curl into the palm or extend outward without control. (There are also other forms of focal dystonia which can affect other parts of the body.) He cured himself completely by doing pioneering work with the large muscles of the armpit and shoulder. Many injured musicians from around the world have been helped by working with him and learning his methods.

Here is an excerpt from Hungarian documentary filmmaker Eszter Hajdu’s Demon Hands about different people’s experience with focal dystonia. Leisner describes and demonstrates some of the basic principles that he discovered along his path to curing focal dystonia in himself and others.

This Lecture should be of interest to all performing musicians.

He will also give a guitar Masterclass in Studio 315: 1.00pm – 3.00pm
