We Need To Talk About Painting

About this event:

We Need To Talk About Painting, is a series of talks organised by NCAD MFA and hosted at IMMA. The subject is painting and the purpose of these talks is to engender an understanding, across all schools of thought, of painting’s position and definition in a contemporary art context.

Some of the speakers taking part are: Christina Kennedy, Senior Curator IMMA, Mark O’Kelly, Head of Painting NCAD, Mark Garry, Lecturer TU, Beth O’Halloran, Lecturer NCAD, Isabel Nolan, Artist, Colin Martin, Head of School RHA, Dr. Donal Moloney, Lecturer MTU.

Brief details of the points up for discussion:

Painting is not currently buckling under the weight of historical reference nor is it bucking against trends in an effort to create a new movement!  So, what is painting's current position in a contemporary context?

Research: The importance of research which adds layers of interest for the audience and feeds and nourishes an art practice; the many categories of research.

How painting is taught and the various approaches taken; from skills-based technical training to interest-driven, open approach.

Is the continued allure of painting related to its directness and accessible, unmediated relationship to the physical body, to materiality and to sense perception? In a world bombarded by a tsunami of technologically mediated imagery are we humans deprived of the much needed embodied experience?

This talk series is initiated and hosted by Karen Ebbs with Cian McLoughlin and Caitlyn Rooke, NCAD MFA.  These talks have been kindly sponsored by the painting department at the National College of Art & Design.

Booking is essential and places are limited.
