A Contemporary Art Project by MTU Crawford College of Art & Design in collaboration with Dingle Literary Festival and Artist & Poet Sean Borodale, Supported by MTU Arts Office and MTU TLU.

Presented at An Díseart for Dingle Literary Festival, November 2022

unbound is a contemporary art project that aims to explore the diverse and influential relationships between literature, poetry, the spoken word and the production of visual arts. The project aims in particular to highlight and reference the influence of literature on and around contemporary forms of expanded print making and modern book arts. The project was initiated and led by MTU Crawford College of Art & Design lecturers Catherine Hehir and James L. Hayes, and aims to encapsulate an innovative interdisciplinary pedagogical approach which showcases and highlights the benefits of cross pollination between contemporary fine art practices and contemporary literature. We explored the data collected in this project and investigated approaches artists use when engaging in the art of making, and how they adopt a visual strategy within a conceptual frame work. One of the first tests was the Lyrigraph Manifesto workshop which is based on ’’the words lyric, from the Greek concerning the lyre, and graphic, from graphos, the Greek for writing. Graphic also alludes to elements critical to a practice of lyri-graph-making; the graphic realm of image-making and drawing, and to the graph of logging or measuring, for instance seismograph or biograph. The lyrigraph refers to drawing or writing with lyrically inflected language.” This was introduced by visiting artist Sean Borodale.

“MTU Arts Office was delighted to support and co-fund the unbound project through the CONNECT Le Chéile Arts Project Fund, with our project partners in the MTU Teaching & Learning Unit. During this project, a large group of students at MTU CCAD engaged in writing, sound, performance and printmaking workshops to produce a unique body of artworks and inform their continuing practices. The unbound

project is exemplary as a collaborative project with professional, industry, and public engagement. MTU is an arts rich University with arts and cultural events throughout the year. For listings and archive of arts events across MTU, see arts.mtu.ie “
