Cliffs II

Mary Callaghan

Fri 6th Feb – Fri 6th March 2015

Alchemy, 123 Barack Street, Cork

Alchemy is pleased to announce the opening of Cliffs II an exhibition of drawings by Mary Callaghan as the first artist to exhibition in the space. The series of cliff drawings are a follow on from her first solo exhibition ‘Crow Head – An Investigation’ in the Sarah Walker Gallery, Castletownbere last September.

This Cliffs II exhibition comprises two large drawings, several smaller framed sketches and 3 embroidered pieces. The subject matter of cliffs are presented on various media including paper, book pages and found material. Fine delicate line forms sturdy and rugged shapes which sit against the perceived space of sea and sky. Influenced by the dramatic coastal scenery of West Cork, Mary uses what is readily available to create new works including pages from her collection of old books. A perfect setting therefore to exhibit in the relaxed surroundings of the café and second hand bookshop Alchemy.

Mary graduated with a degree in Electronic Engineering from CIT in 2003 and worked as an engineer with a multi-national company designing electronic devices. Moving to Beara in 2008, she came to know the thriving community of artists there and began working as a graphic designer for the Buddhist centre Dzogchen Beara. Over time she began selling her own artwork in local galleries. In  the last few years she has exhibited in the Mill Cove Gallery, Ennistymon Courthouse Gallery and the Allihies Summer Arts Festival. Now living in Ardfield, Clonakilty, she continues to use the rugged sea vistas as a source of inspiration.

Alchemy is open Mon – Fri 8.30-6 10-6 Sat/Sun
