“Much of the world is still unclosed,” wrote Ernst Bloch in ‘The Principle of Hope’ (1936-1947). By this he meant that our understanding and interpretation of the place we find ourselves in is not always fully fixed. Isabel English’s work addresses these Utopian implications, moments that may have passed, in a set of drawings and plans for unrealised projects, suggestive figures, architectural models, that all drift in between our conscious and unconscious understanding of our world.
